Youseum’s Cocktail Walk: Lift Your Spirit
April, 28th 2022
Are you a fan of drag, music and cocktails? Say no more. Youseum’s Cocktail Walk: Lift Your Spirit is happening on the 7th of May and in this blog we will tell you all about it.
For those of you who are not familiar with the term drag: it refers to the performance of masculinity, femininity or other forms of gender expression. A drag queen is usually a male person who expresses femininity and a drag king is usually a female person who expresses masculinity.
There are several stories about how drag originated. It probably originates from the late 16th and early 17th century, when roles in the theater were only allowed to be performed by men. In that period, women wore heavy and long dresses, which gave men the feeling that they had to drag the dress with them. This is where the term drag probably comes from. Others believe that the term drag stands for dressed as a girl. The first drag queen is said to have been John Cooper in the 18th century, with the name Princess Seraphina. Gradually drag became more known and popular, resulting in several drag bars and events that are being hosted from this day still.
